Sufism is described as a reaction to urbanization in Muslim societies, emerging as a renunciatory movement against the new social and economic order. A core issue was balancing reliance on God (tawakkul) with commerce. Ascetics rejected worldly wealth and trade, centering their beliefs on absolute reliance on God. This extreme stance extended to avoiding even thinking about the future, including a few days ahead.<\/p>\n<p>The understanding of poverty and wealth in Sufism differs from classical Islamic law&#8217;s framework based on zakat. Poverty was idealized as a state of detachment from material wealth and worldly possessions. This approach also aligned with the ethics of begging, though it was moderated by the Islamic emphasis on dignity and self-reliance.<\/p>\n<p>The seminar further explored early Sufi critiques of knowledge and social integration. Ascetics opposed the professionalization of religious knowledge and its use as a tool of authority, instead favoring illiteracy (ummiyyah) and seclusion.
