Ayhan Çitil guided the discussion in a dialogical format, emphasizing philosophy as a living practice rather than a static body of doctrine. The seminar provided a multifaceted exploration of both the content of the Republic and the philosophical method it embodies.

Main Themes and Topics

Key Concepts and Personal Reflections
Students highlighted core themes such as the distinction between doxa (opinion) and epistēmē (knowledge), the principle of “each doing their own task,” gender equality, and the exclusion of poets from the ideal city. The divided line analogy, the immortality of the soul, and the social implications of justice were frequently referenced, showing the text’s resonance across personal and societal dimensions.

The Ideal State and Its Tension with Reality
Many students observed that Plato’s ideal state seems detached from real-world possibilities. However, they acknowledged its value as a moral compass. Critiques included the philosopher-king’s right to lie, the exclusivity of truth to an intellectual elite, and the tension between philosophical ideals and modern legal systems.

Sophists, Persuasion, and the Nature of Philosophy
The contrast between sophists’ relativistic epistemology and Plato’s claim to absolute truth was explored. Persuasion was discussed not only in rhetorical terms but as a transformative process aimed at reordering the soul. Plato was seen as offering an ordered and just worldview in contrast to the destabilizing doubt introduced by the sophists.

Interdisciplinary Connections
Students from diverse academic backgrounds—psychology, law, philosophy, theology, and education—related Plato’s ideas to their own fields. Discussions included connections to al-Ghazali’s theory of human faculties, the concept of play-based education, innate human dispositions, and justice in Islamic thought.

The Problem of Ideal and Real in Philosophy
The tension between ideals and practical reality was a key focus. Students noted that Plato presented the ideal state as a normative guide rather than a political blueprint. This was linked to Kant’s view of ideals as regulative principles—goals we strive toward but never fully realize.

Conclusion
This sixth seminar served as a culmination of the series, emphasizing critical engagement and reflective synthesis. Plato’s Republic emerged not only as a model for political theory but as a guide for personal ethical orientation and philosophical self-inquiry. Philosophy was experienced here as a bridge between past and present, theory and life, and across academic disciplines—a method of questioning that transcends boundaries.

["post-4601","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
