Drawing from Plato’s dialectical approach, Çitil advocates for the “revival” of metaphysics—not as repetition of the past, but as a thinking style that can offer new solutions today.

Reconstructing Platonic Dialectic
Çitil proposes a return to Platonic dialectic through concepts such as “the One” and “Idea.” Concepts like number, place, sign, and soul are analyzed in their relational structure to the One. This opens a field of inquiry into how intelligible entities (noeta) are constructed and how they undergo individuation (taneleşme), becoming thinkable objects.

The Concept of ‘That Which Is in Itself’ (Nafs al-Amr) and Apeiron
At the core of the seminar is the concept of nafs al-amr—“what is in itself.” This is imagined as a three-dimensional conceptual space in which entities are formed in relation to the One. The notion of apeiron (the indeterminate or infinite) plays a foundational role in this construction. Its relationship to dynamis (potentiality) and hyle (matter) is also emphasized.

Set Theory and Platonic Ontology
In the second half of the seminar, the discussion turns to Cantor’s set theory and the modern formulations of infinity. Çitil links sets to Platonic intelligibles, suggesting that a set is not just a collection of objects but a wholeness constituted by acts of mind. Cantor’s diagonal argument and the distinction between different infinities are examined from this metaphysical perspective.

Conclusion:
This seminar treats Aristotle’s metaphysics as a foundation for expanding philosophical thought rather than as a historical relic. Through a deep engagement with Platonic concepts such as the One, apeiron, and dialectic, Çitil lays the groundwork for reconstructing the classics in ways that illuminate modern problems. The act of philosophical revival is framed as a generative, not repetitive, process.

AYHAN ÇİTİL: ARİSTOTELES, METAFİZİK OKUMALARI 5.
