Aristotle questions both the linguistic and logical coherence of the idea that material beings “partake” in Forms. He argues that the metaphorical explanations offered by Plato fall short of conceptual clarity. Aristotle echoes Plato’s own self-criticism in Parmenides, showing that ordinary causal relations do not apply to the relationship between Forms and particulars.

Substance, Motion, and the Inadequacy of Numbers
Aristotle emphasizes that Forms, if they are to be real substances, must not be separated from the things they explain. Forms cannot account for motion or change. Additionally, the unclear boundary between ideal and mathematical numbers undermines the explanatory power of Platonic metaphysics. Even if numbers are conceived as ratios, their causative function becomes obscure.

Wisdom, Practical Activity, and Ethical Orientation
Çitil connects Aristotle’s critique of Plato to modern thought, particularly Kant’s philosophy. The inability to explain participation theoretically redirects metaphysics toward the practical domain. Wisdom is thus redefined not as a purely theoretical virtue but as grounded in ethical action and artistic creation. The seminar parallels this view with Kant’s theory of practical reason, emphasizing ethical and aesthetic engagement as humanity’s true mode of “participation” in being.

Reinterpreting Participation as Thinking
Participation (methexis) is reframed not as a metaphysical relationship but as an act of thought itself. Human beings, by thinking, unify and constitute the object, thereby becoming the real participants in being. Conceptual unity thus becomes the foundation of objectivity and presence.

Conclusion:
Aristotle’s critique of Platonic Forms reveals the limits of traditional metaphysics and signals the need for a reorientation. In this seminar, Çitil proposes a new interpretation of participation as a dynamic act of thinking rather than a fixed ontological link. This shift foregrounds practical reason as the core of philosophical inquiry and opens a path for the future of metaphysics rooted in ethical engagement.

AYHAN ÇİTİL: ARİSTOTELES, METAFİZİK OKUMALARI 10.
