The instructor adopts an alternative reading order—2-3-4-1—rather than the traditional sequence. In this structure, the discussion begins with being and accident, followed by truth and the classification of sciences.

Distinction between Accident and Essence:
According to Aristotle, accidents (incidental predicates) are not suitable objects of scientific knowledge, as they are neither necessary nor universally present. Examples such as a house with pink shutters or a thunderstorm on a summer day illustrate the contingent nature of accidents. The relation between accident and being is explored, with a reference to Plato’s critique of sophists.

Interpretation through Modern Logic:
The accident–essence distinction is revisited through the lens of modern logic, particularly modal logic, involving necessity and contingency. Structures such as “necessarily, if p then q” are used to critique sophistic fallacies and to reaffirm Aristotle’s consistent differentiation between essential and accidental attributes.

Leibniz and the Analytic Predicate Theory:
Leibniz’s idea that all true predicates are contained in the subject is introduced and questioned. Çitil examines whether a subject is merely the sum of all its predicates and problematizes the individuality of beings based on this analytic framework.

Metaphysics, Matter, and the Problem of Divine Will:
A critical assessment is made of Aristotle’s view of matter as the ground of accidents. This leads to theological inquiries involving divine knowledge, human responsibility, freedom, and necessity. The central theological question posed is: “When does an individual truly become themselves?”

Conclusion:
This seminar offers a multi-layered analysis of Aristotle’s notion of accident and its implications for predication, essence, individuality, modality, and theology. By connecting questions of divine knowledge, freedom, and responsibility to classical metaphysics, Çitil reintroduces ancient philosophical problems into contemporary discourse.

AYHAN ÇİTİL: ARİSTOTELES, METAFİZİK OKUMALARI 30.
