Aristotle suggests that if there exists an eternal, immaterial, and unmoved substance, then the investigation of that being becomes the most crucial philosophical endeavor. The lecture highlights the metaphysical significance of form (eidos) as the principle that makes a substance what it is.

Model Theory and Mathematical Structures:
The seminar draws analogies between modern model theory and Aristotle’s method. Scientific knowledge, for Aristotle, arises from logically deducing explanations from true premises. Mathematics and logical structures serve as frameworks for constructing theories and models, some of which may not directly correspond to empirical reality (as in quantum mechanics), yet still “save the phenomena.”

The Inadequacy of Materialism:
Through examples like houses made of bricks or syllables formed by letters, Aristotle shows that wholes possess qualities irreducible to their parts. The same applies to living beings: they are not mere aggregations of matter, but unified entities through a principle of form. Form is not produced by matter or motion, and it is neither generated nor destroyed.

Substance, Form, and Teleology:
Aristotle asserts that what makes a being what it is—its ousia—is its form, not its matter. He critiques questions like “why is a human human?” as metaphysically empty and instead insists that proper inquiry asks what makes a thing have the structure and function it has. This leads to a teleological explanation, where the final cause (telos) is essential in defining the essence of things.

Limits of Scientific Inquiry and the Role of Philosophy:
The seminar critically contrasts Aristotle’s metaphysical method with both theistic theology and modern science. While modern science explains physical processes and empirical structures, it falls short in explaining how these structures constitute a unified, self-aware being. For Aristotle, philosophy addresses these questions through the concept of form, although without invoking a creating God.

Conclusion:
This seminar explores how Aristotle aims to define substance not by its material or empirical attributes but through the principle of form and teleology. It sets the stage for understanding how the unity and essence of beings are constituted metaphysically, beyond the limits of both empirical science and naive materialism.

AYHAN ÇİTİL: ARİSTOTELES, METAFİZİK OKUMALARI 32.
