In this context, he targets Leibniz’s metaphysical system, asserting that Leibniz conflated thinking with knowing, and failed to distinguish between representations grounded in concepts and those grounded in intuition.

The Role of Reflection in Kant’s Epistemology:
For Kant, reflection is the process of comparing and abstracting concepts. However, the key is transcendental reflection—the act of determining whether a representation belongs to sensibility or understanding. Only by distinguishing between intuitions and concepts can we avoid amphibolous thinking and uphold the legitimacy of the phenomenon–noumenon distinction.

Kant’s Critique of Leibniz and Monadology:
Kant argues that Leibniz’s monads are mere conceptual representations lacking empirical content. He challenges the principle of the “identity of indiscernibles” by showing that in the phenomenal world, spatial and temporal positioning allows two objects with identical properties to be distinct. Thus, what holds at the level of thought may not apply to appearances.

The Four Concepts of Reflection: Identity, Opposition, Inner–Outer, and Matter–Form:
Kant critically assesses Leibniz’s metaphysics using these four reflective concepts. He contends that:

Identity must consider spatial-temporal context.

Opposition in thought does not equate to opposition in sense.

The inner–outer distinction must be approached through phenomena, not abstract essence.

Matter and form are misapplied when metaphysical structure is prioritized over empirical constitution.

Transcendental Topology and the Critical Method:
Kant proposes that each act of judgment requires us to determine the “locus” of the object—whether it belongs to intuition or understanding. Drawing on Aristotle’s idea of topos (logical place), Kant argues for a transcendental topology that disciplines thought by clarifying where and how concepts can be validly applied.

Conclusion:
This seminar explores Kant’s dismantling of Leibniz’s metaphysical system through the concept of amphiboly and the method of transcendental reflection. By insisting on the strict separation of conceptual and intuitive domains, Kant defends the integrity of critical philosophy. He exposes how failure to make this distinction results in illegitimate metaphysical claims and misapplied concepts. This session thus reinforces the critical method’s foundational role in establishing valid knowledge.

AYHAN ÇİTİL: KANT OKUMALARI,SAF AKLIN ELEŞTİRİSİ 22.
