It explores how Sufism is framed within orthodox Islamic boundaries, especially in relation to epistemology, divine justice, power, human will, and mystical knowledge. The seminar also clarifies how Sufism engages critically yet constructively with theological doctrines.

Main Themes and Headings

Boundaries of Sufism: Law, Creed, and Morality

Sufism is shown to operate within the limits of Sunni jurisprudence and theology. Junayd al-Baghdādī’s notion that Sufism must be restricted by fiqh and ʿaqīdah is central to Kelâbâzī’s perspective, functioning as a defense against antinomian or heretical deviations.

Founding Figures: Junayd, Sarrāj, and Kelâbâzī

Demirli outlines a genealogical framework: Junayd as the founder of Sufi thought, Sarrāj as the theorist, and Kelâbâzī as the one who incorporated Sufism into the broader Islamic sciences. This trio represents the systematization and institutionalization of Sufism.

Theological Issues: Divine Justice, Power, and Free Will

Sufis reject the Muʿtazilite doctrine of aṣlaḥ (God must always do what is best), arguing that imposing obligation on God violates divine majesty. Sufism sides with Ashʿarite thought, affirming God’s absolute power while maintaining a paradoxical yet functional understanding of human freedom—”being compelled to be free.”

Tension Between Trust in God and Human Effort

The seminar explores the longstanding debate over tawakkul (trust in God) versus kasb (earning/labor). While early Sufis leaned toward radical trust, later thought accommodated personal responsibility and effort alongside divine reliance.

Epistemology: Revelation, Intuition, and Authority

Sufism is not based on subjective intuition but on disciplined spiritual struggle (mujāhada). Knowledge through kashf (unveiling) and ilhām (inspiration) is viewed critically and subordinated to the Qur’an and Sunnah. The Junaydian model accepts only revealed knowledge as authoritative.

Additional Theological Topics: Soul, Miracles, and Legal Responsibility

On the soul, Sufis align with kalām in seeing it as connected to the body. Miracles (karāmāt) are affirmed but carefully distinguished from prophetic miracles. Legal obligation (taklīf) is universal, and libertine attitudes (ibāḥī trends) are categorically rejected.

Conclusion

This seminar presents Kelâbâzī’s Sufism as a coherent, Sunni-compatible theological and ethical system. It reframes mystical knowledge not as an esoteric deviation but as a disciplined and revealed path to truth. Within this model, Sufism integrates with mainstream Islamic sciences while offering a unique lens on spiritual freedom and responsibility.

EKREM DEMİRLİ-KELÂBÂZÎ-et-TA’ARRUF 6.
