The discussion frames this conflict not merely as a personal or narrative episode but as a cosmic struggle, connecting Homeric themes with Near Eastern myths of creation, divine rivalry, and elemental opposition. Through this lens, the seminar investigates the narrative as an allegory of Olympian supremacy over local cults and mythic orders.

Main Themes

Skamandros’ Resistance and Mythic Background

Skamandros reacts not only to the pollution of his river but also to the extermination of the Paionians. His human-like protest reflects a motif from Near Eastern mythology—freshwater’s longing to merge with saltwater—evoking theological and cosmological tensions.

Theomachy and Ugaritic Parallels

The battle between Achilles and the river is likened to the Ugaritic myth of Baal’s conflict with Yam, the sea god. Storm gods (e.g., Zeus, Baal, Tešub) confronting water gods reveal a structural myth of cosmic hierarchy and divine struggle present across Mediterranean traditions.

Hephaistos and the Figure of Kothar

Hephaistos’ use of fire to subdue the river mirrors the Ugaritic craftsman-god Kothar, who forges divine weapons for Baal. The parallels highlight a shared mythic archetype across cultures where craftsmen deities are pivotal in taming primordial forces.

Achilles’ Fear of Death and the Need for Kleos

Achilles’ plea to Zeus shows his fear not of death itself, but of dying unheroically—drowned and unburied, thus forgotten. Burial and kleos (glory) are essential for Homeric heroism, and denial of a proper tomb is the gravest humiliation.

Cultic Institutionalization and Olympian Victory

The burning of sacred groves and river life symbolizes the suppression of earlier nature cults by the Olympian order. This is interpreted as part of a broader mythopolitical strategy of Panhellenic unification and cultural assimilation through mythological narrative.

Conclusion

Seminar 53 interprets the Homeric episode of Achilles and Skamandros as a mythic reenactment of cosmic conflict, drawing on Near Eastern motifs. The triumph of Hephaistos and the Olympians signifies not just narrative resolution, but the establishment of cultural and theological authority in the ancient Greek world.

ERMAN GÖREN, HOMEROS OKUMALARI:ILİAS 53.
