Education is not defined as mere knowledge transmission, but as an intense, transformative experience—what Ekrem Demirli calls “the lesson of the divine names.” This process is direct, real, and demanding, mirroring the divine pedagogy itself. The ultimate aim of Sufism is to awaken the human being to their timeless and primordial nature by reaching the “infinity of the heart.”

Main Themes and Topics

True Education and Authenticity

Education must be an authentic encounter. The teacher should not perform but engage with the student genuinely. God’s teaching of the names (esma) is similarly direct and transformative—never rhetorical.

Tension Between Imitation and Realization

Imitation (taqlīd) may shape outward behavior but fail to elevate the intellect. Sufism seeks to transcend imitation through realization (taḥqīq), where thinking reconstructs action rather than the reverse.

Divine Relationship: Lord–Servant and the Heart

Every person carries an imprint of divine eternality. This innate quality allows the heart to become a space vast enough to contain knowledge of the Lord. The heart becomes the ontological locus of divine connection.

Consciousness Beyond Time and Space

Sufism aims to awaken a level of consciousness not confined by temporal existence. By discovering the eternal within, the human being re-emerges in an eternal dimension beyond space and time.

Imagination and Witnessing

Those who did not see the Prophet in person but know him through imagination or inner vision are still considered witnesses. This witnessing occurs through hearing, imagining, or sensing—and marks the first step in spiritual education.

Conclusion

This seminar reframes Sufi education as an existential and ontological awakening rather than a passive reception of knowledge. Drawing from Ibn al-ʿArabī’s emphasis on pre-eternity and the heart, Demirli presents learning as a real and transformative struggle. The aim of Sufism is not outward mastery, but an inward awakening to truth and selfhood.

EKREM DEMİRLİ, FUSÛSU’L-HİKEM OKUMALARI 50.
