Sulaym\u0101n and his seminal work al-Tafs\u012br al-Kab\u012br. Before initiating textual readings, the seminar focuses on providing a historical, intellectual, and methodological introduction to Muk\u0101til, emphasizing his significance in the development of Qur\u2019anic exegesis and his unique position within early Islamic scholarship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Main Themes<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Historical and Regional Background of Muk\u0101til:<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muk\u0101til, hailing from Balkh in present-day Afghanistan, lived a scholarly and politically engaged life across major intellectual centers such as Merv, Basra, and Baghdad. His scholarly mobility and interactions with various schools and sects underscore the dynamic nature of early Islamic intellectual history.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Critique of Tafs\u012br Historiography:<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The seminar challenges dominant orientalist models of tafs\u012br historiography, especially those influenced by Ignaz Goldziher. It argues that such frameworks often marginalize or misrepresent early mufassirs like Muk\u0101til due to rigid periodization and prescriptive methodologies.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Methodological Distinctiveness of Muk\u0101til:<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Contrary to claims that early tafs\u012br was merely transmitive (riw\u0101yah-based), Muk\u0101til is shown to exhibit interpretive independence (dir\u0101yah), employing contextual analysis, intra-Qur\u2019anic coherence, and linguistic sensitivity. His approach prioritizes meaning over strict reliance on transmission chains.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Isn\u0101d Controversy and Scholarly Reception:<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muk\u0101til was heavily criticized by \u1e25ad\u012bth scholars for omitting isn\u0101ds (chains of narration), leading to accusations of unreliability. Nevertheless, many of his transmitted reports are confirmed by authoritative \u1e25ad\u012bth sources, and several scholars, including Im\u0101m al-Sh\u0101fi\u02bf\u012b, acknowledged the depth and utility of his tafs\u012br work.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Legacy and Works:<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muk\u0101til\u2019s three extant works\u2014al-Tafs\u012br al-Kab\u012br, his commentary on 500 legal verses, and al-Wuj\u016bh wa al-Na\u1e93\u0101\u02beir\u2014represent foundational contributions to Qur\u2019anic sciences. Despite severe critiques, he remains a pioneering figure whose intellectual contributions warrant reevaluation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muk\u0101til b. Sulaym\u0101n emerges as a critical but underappreciated figure in the history of tafs\u012br. This seminar underscores the need for a revised historiography that accounts for his pioneering methods and acknowledges the limitations of modern categorizations.
