The course explores scholarly perspectives regarding the nature of revelation, the authority of the Torah, its formation process, and the extent to which it is shaped by human involvement. Thus, the seminar seeks to demonstrate how modern methods of Biblical Criticism have been received and interpreted in Jewish theology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Main Themes<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong> The Position of the Sacred Text in Jewish and Christian Traditions<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Torah is considered a sacred and authoritative text in both traditions; however, their conceptions of revelation and the function of scripture differ. Judaism emphasizes a legalistic and literal commentary tradition, while Christianity focuses more on deriving theological interpretations from scripture.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong> Jewish Exegetical Tradition: Peshat and Derash<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Two foundational hermeneutical methods in Jewish history are highlighted:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Peshat: The objective, literal meaning intended by the author and grasped by the original audience<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Derash: A subjective, interpretive meaning adapted to the needs of later communities<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong> Definition and Aim of Biblical Criticism<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The term \u201ccriticism\u201d does not aim to desacralize the text; rather, it seeks to understand it better, similar to textual editing or producing critical editions in traditional scholarship.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong> Historical vs. Literary Criticism (High &amp; Lower Criticism)<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Historical Criticism (High Criticism): Studies the historical formation, sources, and dating of the sacred text<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Literary Criticism (Lower Criticism): Focuses on identifying the most authentic and accurate reading of the text<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong> The Textual Formation of the Torah<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Modern academic scholarship maintains that the current Torah does not originate from the Mosaic period. Rather, it consists of materials written across different eras, shaped by multiple authors and redactors, combining both oral and written traditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This seminar demonstrates that biblical criticism is not a project of undermining revelation, but a scholarly effort to achieve a clearer and more accurate understanding of the sacred text. While modern Jewish thought occasionally faces tension between critical findings and traditional views of authority, historical and analytical methods ultimately deepen theological insight by revealing the textual development and contextual background of scripture.
