The seminar examines Weber\u2019s argument that the Reformation did not directly create capitalism but prepared a cultural and ethical foundation for its development.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Main Themes<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Insufficiency of National Character<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Weber rejects theories based on national character as explanations for the emergence of capitalism. Generalizations such as English or German character cannot explain the rise of the capitalist spirit; what matters is the moral discipline shaped by specific religious movements.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> The Aim and Limits of the Reformation<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The goal of Reformation leaders was not to create capitalism but to secure salvation. Nevertheless, the Reformation transformed the moral meaning of worldly labor, producing new psychological motivations that later supported capitalist behavior.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong> Weber\u2019s Methodological Warnings<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Weber stresses that he is not judging the truth of doctrines but examining their historical effects. He rejects deterministic links between capitalism and the Reformation, arguing instead for a complex and reciprocal relationship.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong> Importance of Psychological Motivation<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Economic behavior is shaped not directly by doctrinal content but by the long-term psychological disciplines produced by religious beliefs. Weber therefore focuses on their shared ethical patterns rather than theological distinctions.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><strong> The Ideal-Type Approach<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Weber argues that historical reality cannot be depicted exactly; thus he constructs ideal types to reveal underlying structures. The ideal type of inner-worldly asceticism is one such analytical tool.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><strong> Introduction to Inner-Worldly Asceticism<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The key distinction is between monastic asceticism and inner-worldly asceticism. The latter does not withdraw from the world but serves God through active labor. This forms the foundation of the modern capitalist work ethic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This seminar shows how Weber limits the causal role of the Reformation in the rise of capitalism but identifies Protestant inner-worldly asceticism as the cultural and psychological foundation for the capitalist spirit.
