Kurtul Gülenç grounds philosophy systematically through the dual axes of being and knowledge. While the first lecture dealt with the origins of philosophy, this session focuses on the character and conditions of philosophical thinking itself.

Main Themes

The Nature of Philosophical Thinking

Philosophical thinking differs from ordinary thought in being critical, systematic, and foundational. It questions given assumptions and directs inquiry toward the foundations of knowledge, morality, and existence. Gülenç defines philosophy’s essence as the courage to ask “why?”

The Problem of Knowledge (Epistemology)

At the core of philosophy lies the question of knowledge. “What do I know?”, “How do I know?”, and “Is knowledge possible?” form the central problems of epistemology. Gülenç argues that knowledge is constructed through the interaction of sensation, reason, and experience, comparing epistemological approaches from Ancient Greece to Cartesian rationalism.

Ontology and the Question of Being

The second main question of philosophy is “What is being?”. Gülenç emphasizes that being is not merely a physical reality but also an intellectual concept. By examining the ontological insights of Thales, Heraclitus, and Parmenides, he outlines the early foundations of metaphysical thought.

Philosophical Attitude: Inquiry and Critique

Philosophy represents a state of intellectual vigilance against dogma. Gülenç defines it as the act of understanding rather than believing. Hence, philosophy is not simply a form of knowledge but an attitude—characterized by doubt, critique, and intellectual autonomy.

The Distinction Between Philosophy and Science

Science deals with facts; philosophy reflects on their meaning. Science establishes causal relationships, while philosophy asks, “Why does causality exist at all?” According to Gülenç, this distinction marks philosophy as a deeper and more reflective form of human thought.

Conclusion

This lecture demonstrates that philosophy is not merely a repository of knowledge but an activity of self-reflection. Philosophy arises from questioning; it unites the inquiries into being and knowledge to help humanity understand its place in the world. As Gülenç emphasizes, philosophy does not teach one what to think—it invites one to think, for thinking is the most profound way of knowing oneself.

KURTUL GÜLENÇ, GENEL FELSEFE DERSLERİ 2.
