The multiplicity of souls does not arise from their essence but from their individuation by bodies. The soul cannot become an individual without the body; individuality necessarily occurs through the body.

The Nature of the Soul’s Relation to the Body

The soul is not the form of the body; nor is it a being that occupies space within it. Its relation to the body is not a relation of inhabiting but one of engaging and governing it. Since the soul is a simple substance, it cannot undergo corruption; although the body perishes, the soul continues to exist. For this reason the body is mortal whereas the soul is immortal.

The Impossibility of Transmigration and the Preservation of Individuality

The impossibility of transmigration arises from the fact that a soul cannot pass into another body either logically or metaphysically. Each body accepts only one soul specific to it. Souls multiply due to the multiplicity of bodies; and although the body perishes, the “individuating relation” of the soul persists, preventing the soul from merging into a universal soul. Therefore individuality continues after death.

Conclusion

This lesson explained the origination of the soul with the body, the relation between body and soul, the reason for the multiplicity of souls, the impossibility of transmigration, and the continuation of individuality after death. The soul is individualized through the body, yet the body’s death does not harm its existence, because the soul is a simple, immortal, and independent substance.

MEHMET ZAHİT TİRYAKİ, İBN SİNA, KİTABU’N NEFS 6.
